BEHAVE project Video: Better Habits for Cleaner Public Spaces
date: 22. 06. 2026
As the lead partner of the European BEHAVE project, the Municipality of Novo mesto is working together with partners from Belgium, Croatia, Italy and Norway to find new ways of reducing waste in public spaces. The project is based on behavioural science and a simple insight: if we understand how people think and behave, we can make the right choice the easiest one. The BEHAVE project has released its new introductory video, showcasing how behavioural science can help improve waste prevention and waste management in public spaces across Europe.

What if cleaner public spaces started with a simple everyday choice?
Every day, we make small decisions. Where to throw away a piece of waste. Whether to sort it correctly. Often almost unconsciously – yet these small habits have a significant impact on the world around us.

If we understand how people think and behave, we can make the right choice the easiest one
The BEHAVE project is built on a simple idea: if we understand how people think and behave, we can work together to create cleaner, more pleasant public spaces. Parks, events, tourist attractions – places where we meet, relax, and create memories.
Through innovative behavioural science approaches, BEHAVE encourages changes that lead to smarter waste management. Not through rules and commands, but through understanding and subtle nudges that make the right choice the easiest one.

The project brings together six partner organisations from Slovenia, Belgium, Croatia, Italy, and Norway, led by the Municipality of Novo mesto (Slovenia). Together, they are working towards a shared vision: cleaner, more attractive, and more welcoming public spaces for residents and visitors alike.
To reach audiences across all partner regions, the video is available with subtitles in English, Slovenian, Croatian, Dutch, French, Norwegian and Italian. The video and subtitle files can also be viewed and downloaded from the BEHAVE Library.
The BEHAVE project is based on behavioural science
Every day, people make countless small decisions – where to dispose of waste, whether to sort it correctly, or how they use public spaces. These actions often happen almost unconsciously, yet they have a significant impact on the environment and the quality of the places we share.

BEHAVE (BEHaviour Analysis and Valorisation for Elevated Waste Prevention Strategies) is built on the idea that understanding human behaviour is key to creating more sustainable communities. Rather than relying solely on rules and regulations, the project explores how behavioural insights and subtle nudges can encourage people to make better waste management choices naturally and effortlessly.
The project focuses on public spaces with high visitor numbers, such as parks, tourist attractions, sports facilities, and events, where waste separation and prevention remain a challenge. By analysing behavioural patterns and exchanging good practices across Europe, BEHAVE aims to help cities and regions design more effective waste prevention strategies and support the transition towards a circular economy.
